Lens Box Media Works was an idea that germinated out of needs and experiences, outside the academic world. This is what the startup is all about.

Established in the August of 2018, it was started by 3 friends who share a common interest – creativity; and also share the same alma mater – Department of Media & Communication Studies (DMCS), Pune. Located at New Kalyani Nagar, in a small but well-kept building, with 2 pups, and hosting dozens of meetings and discussions on a daily basis, Lens Box Media Works is a casual workplace with serious minds working behind them.

The office welcomes you with  several ongoing crew meetings, where you find Thomas, the founder-director of the company, heading the discussion.  He shares his story of the startup, “it all started in the year 2017 when we realized that we too can create media content and provide professional services.” Beside him was the production head of the startup, Ashutosh. He had a very similar story to share about wanting to create something of his own while studying at Media & Communication studies course. Going to the next room, where the third member, Daniel was taking a meeting of the social media team. He is the executive manager and social media head of the company.  He briefly tells about his responsibilities to execute, “I have to look upon all the legal decisions taken for the projects and ensure a smooth facilitation of shoots. Also the updating of website and initial presentations for the clients are my responsibilities.”

Each of the core members carries a good degree of experience in diverse fields of the media. While Thomas has industrial experience in big production houses like Zee Media group and New Generation Media, Ashutosh developed his interest in photography from his graduation days, starting with a point and shoot camera to using advanced DSLR techniques today. Daniel attributes his experiences to his early college days in 2013 when he first took paid assignments, 2014 when he shot his first short film and starting graphic designing for clients the following year.

The post-graduation course that the 3 did in Media and Communication Studies from Savitribai Phule Pune University remains their primary learning base for this startup. It was here that they decided to get together and start something to their liking. Talking about the same, Thomas adds, “all we had while starting this, was complete trust on our skills and talents.” Taking the decision of starting a startup company wasn’t an easy one for him. “Whenever we approached any other company, there was a question of experience and my qualifications were not seen. Then I decided to invest my skills and my experience on a new startup with the support of two friends who had the same idea” he says while having rice and fried fish with his team.

The company now has a good amount of work in hand, and has recently finished an ad film for Tasta, along with many shoots and various projects coming up. Lens Box Media Works does provide professional photography and videography services for Pre-Wedding, Interior design, Kids, Fashion Wear and other subjects too. While Thomas looks at after the functioning of company, taking the final call on organizational decisions and giving conceptual ideas, Ashutosh looks at the whole production part of it, be it shoots, locations, crew requirements and other things, Daniel’s job remains that of executing and facilitating those projects while also looking at the online presence of it.

“We three are clear about our roles in this company. No one is superior but all 3 are equal in taking decisions, and comfortable working together”, stresses Thomas when asked about the rapport among the team members.

Lens Box Media Works also aims at providing a good platform for freshers who might not get a chance elsewhere to showcase their talents in diverse media fields. The startup currently has a team of interns comprising students from DMCS. They help them in their projects while also learning here. The meetings here are different from corporate ones: not like a formal meeting, there were  discussions, suggestions were heard and welcomed and cracking jokes was also allowed!  Lastly, when asked about what drives them to work in-sync with each other, Thomas replies “We trust each other in our work and are very transparent with each other. Moreover we three are good friends for life”, with a slight smile on his face.
